From a group chat to a real plan: communities and meet-ups on Liev

A good local community gives you a place to return to: for a question, a recommendation or familiar company. Liev separates ongoing communities from particular occasions. Groups keep a conversation going; Spaces help people make a plan to meet or join a session.

Use a Group for an ongoing community and a Space for a specific occasion. Clear rules and clear event details make both easier to join.

What is the difference between a Group and a Space?

A Group is a continuing community. It might bring together people from a home district, neighbours or people with a shared interest. Members can return to its conversations over time, and administrators can set rules about joining and posting.

A Space is an occasion with a purpose and a time: a study session, a sports plan, a festival gathering or a help session. It can be in person or online. A group might discuss exam preparation throughout the month, then create a Space for a particular weekend study session.

Choose a community that matches your needs

Read the group description, rules and recent conversations before joining. Look for a clear purpose and exchanges that you would feel comfortable contributing to. A smaller group with relevant activity can be more useful than a large group where your questions disappear.

Some Liev groups are open to join; others require approval. Administrators can also use announcement-only boards, pin notices and review certain posts. An approval process can help a group manage membership, but it should not be treated as a guarantee about every member or recommendation.

Make your first contribution useful

Begin by answering a question you can help with or introducing yourself briefly. Before asking, check the pinned information and recent discussions. If you recommend a place, explain what you actually know: when you visited, what you used and what might have changed.

Keep business promotions and housing or job listings within the group’s rules. Avoid reposting the same request repeatedly or forwarding private conversations without permission. When something appears unsafe or misleading, use the available reporting tools and give administrators useful context.

Give a Space enough detail to make joining easy

A clear plan helps people decide whether an event fits their schedule and comfort level. ‘Sunday reading hour at a public cafe, bring any book’ is easier to understand than ‘Meet-up soon.’ Use a descriptive title, confirm the date and time, and explain who the session is for.

Liev Spaces can support attendance responses and a participant limit. For online sessions, joining information is available to attendees. Keep the details accurate, and communicate changes early so nobody travels to an outdated venue or waits for a session that has been cancelled.

  • Explain the activity, start time and likely duration.
  • Provide a clear venue or online joining arrangement.
  • Mention any cost, equipment, accessibility considerations or preparation.
  • Set a realistic headcount and explain how participants should confirm.

Help newcomers feel comfortable

For a first in-person gathering, choose a public venue and a manageable activity. Introduce people without pressuring anyone to disclose personal details. Ask before taking or posting photographs, and give attendees an easy way to leave when they need to.

Afterwards, share a useful recap with the community and ask whether people would like another session. Regular, considerate hosting can help a city feel more familiar. It does not require a large event or a perfect turnout; a few people with a shared purpose can be enough.

Common questions

Can a Liev Space be online?

Yes. Spaces can be used for online sessions as well as in-person occasions. Check the host’s description and joining details before making plans.

Are all groups open to everyone?

No. Groups can use open joining or an approval process, and each group has its own purpose and rules. Read those details before requesting to join.
