1. The short version
- We collect what the app needs to work: your account, your profile, and what you post or send.
- We do not sell your data, and we do not show ads.
- We do not track your precise location. Your city is something you choose.
- Nobody can message you until you accept their connect request.
- You can delete your account at any time — in the app or from this website.
- Your data is stored in India.
2. What we collect
Information you give us
| Category | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Account | Name, email address, password (stored only as a secure hash), and phone number if you sign in with one. If you use Google sign-in: your Google name, email and profile photo. |
| Profile | Username, photo, bio, headline, home state and district, current city, when you moved, whether you are a student, professional, job seeker or local. Optionally: work history, education, address and website — each with its own show/hide switch. |
| Business profile | If you create one: business name, category, description, phone, address, opening hours and photo. |
| Content | Posts, photos, polls and votes, comments, likes, saved posts, groups you create or join, spaces you host or attend, and the venue location you pick for an in-person space. |
| Messages | Direct and group chat messages, including photos, documents and contact cards you choose to send. |
| Job applications | The name, phone, email, details and resume you submit when applying for a job. |
| Safety | Reports you file, people you block, and your settings. |
Information collected automatically
- Device and usage: device type, operating system, app version, and a push-notification token so we can send you notifications.
- Security logs: IP address, browser or app identifier, and the time of sign-ins and sign-in attempts. We use these to stop password guessing and account takeover. Email addresses in these logs are stored as one-way hashes.
We do not collect your precise GPS location, your contact list, your call logs or your SMS.
3. How we use it
- To run the service: create your account, show your feed, connect you with people from your home district, deliver messages and notifications.
- To keep people safe: detect spam and scams, enforce rate limits, review reports, and act against accounts that break the Terms.
- To verify accounts when you ask for a verified badge.
- To respond to you when you contact us, and to send essential service messages (such as sign-up codes and password resets).
- To meet legal obligations, including requests from authorities that are lawful under Indian law.
We process your data on the basis of your consent, which you give when you create an account, and for the legitimate uses permitted by the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. You can withdraw consent at any time by deleting your account.
4. What other people can see
- Your name, username, photo, home district, current city and the posts you make are visible to other Liev members. Posts reach the feed you choose: your city, your state or the whole country.
- Work, education and address are shown only if you switch them on. You can also hide yourself from the People directory.
- If you post anonymously, other members do not see who you are. Our moderation team can, so that anonymous posts can still be held accountable.
- Posts in approval-only groups are visible only to that group’s members.
- Your job application is shared with the employer you apply to.
- The joining link and passcode for an online space are shown only to people who have said they are coming.
5. Who we share it with
We do not sell or rent your personal data. We share it only with service providers who help us run Liev, under contracts that limit them to that purpose:
| Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Azure (Central India region) | Hosting our servers, database, file storage and encrypted backups |
| Supabase (open-source software, self-hosted by us) | Database, sign-in and real-time messaging |
| Google sign-in, if you choose it; Firebase Cloud Messaging to deliver Android notifications | |
| Apple | Delivering notifications on iPhone |
| Expo | Routing push notifications to Google and Apple |
| Email delivery provider | Sending sign-up codes and password-reset emails |
We may also disclose information when required by law, a court order or a lawful request from an Indian government authority, or to protect someone from serious harm.
6. Phone permissions
- Notifications — to tell you about messages, connection requests and replies. Optional.
- Photos and files — only when you pick a photo or document to post or send. We never browse your gallery.
- Contacts — only to open the system picker when you choose to share one contact card in a chat. We do not read, upload or store your contact list.
- Internet and network state — to load content and to work gracefully when you are offline.
7. Where your data is stored
Our servers, database and backups are hosted in Microsoft Azure’s Central India region. Notification and sign-in providers may process limited data (such as a device token or your Google account email) outside India as part of delivering their service.
8. How long we keep it
- We keep your data for as long as your account is active.
- When you delete your account, your name and photo are removed and your posts and comments are hidden immediately. The remaining account data is permanently erased within 30 days, and from encrypted backups within 90 days.
- Content you deleted yourself is removed from public view straight away and purged on the same schedule.
- Security logs are kept for up to 180 days.
- We may keep limited records longer where the law requires it, or where they relate to an open report, a dispute, or fraud and abuse prevention.
Details of exactly what is deleted are on the Delete your account page.
9. Your rights
Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 you have the right to:
- Access a summary of the personal data we hold about you and how we use it.
- Correct and update it — most of it you can edit yourself in the app.
- Erase it, by deleting your account.
- Withdraw consent, which you can do by deleting your account.
- Nominate someone to exercise these rights on your behalf in case of death or incapacity.
- Have a grievance addressed by our Grievance Officer, and if unresolved, by the Data Protection Board of India.
To exercise any of these, email [email protected] from the address on your account. We may ask you to confirm your identity.
10. Children
Liev is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone younger. If you believe a child has created an account, write to us and we will remove it.
11. Security
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and backups are encrypted at rest. Passwords are hashed, sign-in attempts are rate-limited, and access to the database is restricted by row-level security so that each person can read only what they are allowed to. Our staff access personal data only when needed to run or protect the service, and every moderation action is logged. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects you, we will notify you and the Data Protection Board as the law requires.
12. Changes to this policy
If we make a material change, we will notify you in the app before it takes effect. The date at the top shows when this policy was last updated.
13. Grievance Officer and contact
In line with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 and the DPDP Act, 2023, you can raise any complaint about your data or content on Liev with our Grievance Officer. We acknowledge complaints within 24 hours and resolve them within 15 days.
